Practicing under the name Dale VN Marshall 2010-2020
Though his bold, expressive paintings and drawings are largely abstract, Dale Collins sees them as a form of self-portraiture, into which he feeds the story and struggles of his past and his ongoing effort to transform the chaos of his life experiences and memories into art. In 1999 he was sectioned in The Cornwall County Asylum, where by chance he reconnected with the graffiti artist "Vermin" who both battled with psychosis. After emerging from this turbulent period, Collins began producing the lush, textured mixed-media paintings and drawings for which he is now celebrated. On a thick ground, he overlays graffiti-like scribbles, fragments of text, lines, and colors, with applications ranging from feverish and gestural to subtle and delicate, reflecting life itself. Today practicing full time near Drogheda ,Co Louth, Ireland he has found an inner peace as a professional painter reflecting on past experiences to create original and exciting artworks.
'Vermin' is still dealing with the effects of mental illness, who also finds it safer with the life of all he has known of being locked up. Vermin connects with 'the shadow' (a Jungian theory from the unconscious thinking) whilst Dale maintains conscious thinking and delivering messages from the former to create compelling, sometimes heartbreaking but hopeful abstracts for the artists recovery to the conscious thought process that we all deserve.
